Here's
wishing SMS messages a very happy birthday! Way back in 3 December
1992, Short Message Service or SMS was first introduced. The world's
first SMS message was sent over Vodafone GSM network in the United
Kingdom using a personal computer to Orbitel 901 handset. The text of
the message was “Merry Christmas.” SMS messages were first commercially
deployed in 1993. Since then, the use of SMS messages has grown big
time, however, the use of SMS messages have started to fall of late.

In all these years, reports have revealed that it is
the first time that the use of SMS messages have declined. "This is
happening for the first time in the history of mobile phones, SMS
volumes are showing signs of decline," said James Thickett, director of
research, Ofcom's said in The Independent report. “The availability of a
wider range of communications tools, like instant messaging and social
networking sites, means people might be sending fewer SMS messages, but
they are communicating electronically more than ever before," added
Thickett in the report.
Apart from sending SMSes from mobile
phones, people can now send them from various online sites and even from
Gmail. To start using the Gmail messaging service, you first have to
save mobile numbers. The process is simple. Just go to the contact and
select the Send SMS option. It will ask you to add a mobile number. Once
added, you will be able to send 50 free text messages.
